I believe there are too many teams currently in Division 1-A (Yes that should be the name of the top division). Some teams should be demoted to Division 1-AA, while others are moved to new conferences. There should be 8 conferences ranging between 12 to 16 teams. I believe too many conferences and teams water down the talent and fan interest in the game. No independents would be allowed so Notre Dame, Army, and Navy would all have to join a conference. The Sun Belt Conference and Western Athletic Conference would be eliminated. The Mid American Conference and Conference USA would join to become the Mid USA Conference. A total of 14 of the 120 current Division 1-A teams would be demoted to Division 1-AA. This is just the first draft but 8 conferences with 12 to 16 teams is the format that should be followed.
